The historic town centre of L’Isle-en-Dodon

A former county town built in the Middle Ages by Bernard Dodon, Count of Comminges, L’Isle-en-Dodon, despite appearances, is not a bastide. It owes this resemblance to the city’s former fortifications that surrounded the castle. Here, stone gives way to brick, which dominates the façades of monuments and old houses.
Stroll through the narrow streets and small squares typical of the medieval period, and stop to visit Saint-Adrien Church dating from the 13th century, whose bell tower and MAGEN organ are listed. Notice the deep, intense colours of the 16th-century stained-glass windows and the 15th-century wooden pietà. Continue your walk past the two market halls that frame the town hall, whose wedding room highlights the frescoes by René Gaston-Lagorre, this painter from Ariège who also painted in the 1940s in other nearby towns and villages, such as in the church of Saint-Laurent-sur-Save.

  • Enjoy the Saturday morning market around the town hall—you’ll find everything you need for your weekly shopping, with local products. Take the time for a coffee on a terrace.
