CROMLECH DU PORT DE PIERREFITE
BOURG-D’OUEIL
About
The Port de Pierrefite is also known as Peyrahita or Pèira-Hita (standing stone).
The cromlechs had a funerary function, but it is also possible that they served as a place of worship and an observation post for the Milky Way.
The cromlech at Port de Pierrefite has a white menhir at its centre, a block of marble made from saccharoid limestone which, judging by its geological nature, comes from the Saint-Béat-Lez area.
Its silhouette stands out from the valley.
Vaguely anthropomorphic, it could evoke a woman wearing the traditional hood, or a petrified shepherdess (or shepherd) with her dog and sheep.
Legend has it that fairies (hadas) and their children (hadeths) came to dance around him at night.
