About
What will you find at LieuZaide? Exhibitions by Jean Dieuzaide, of course, from the family's personal archives, but also books, posters, catalogues, etc. that once belonged to the artist!
Jean Dieuzaide needs no introduction: one of the great French photographers of the generation of Doisneau, Ronis, Cartier Bresson, Riboud… Of all these, he was the first to receive the Prix Niepce in 1955. Doisneau followed in 1956. What sets him apart is that, on the one hand, he did not give in to the call of the capital, continuing to defend his region and his city of Toulouse, where he created the Château d'Eau gallery, but on the other hand, he tackled all areas of photography, reportage, illustration, portraiture, industry, architecture with Romanesque art, aerial views, landscape and still life. He has constantly sought to push to the extreme the limits of an art form that is all too often conventional. To free himself from dependence on the capital, he had set up a very complete studio in Toulouse, which even allowed him to make large-format prints on baryta paper. None of his colleagues mentioned above had a similar studio, and so would not have been able to present an exhibition like the one opening at LieuZaide in Saint Gaudens.
LieuZaide is first and foremost a sort of Toulouse Arlesienne, first mentioned in the local press well over ten years ago, and yet it should have seen the light of day in the pink city!
The name almost took on a life of its own, to the point where it was registered for protection. Its music almost suggests its function: a place dedicated to photographers and, above all, to photography, under the protective wing of Jean Dieuzaide, who fought so hard to defend it from Toulouse. The idea is not to create a kind of mausoleum for the Toulouse artist, but to alternate exhibitions of various photographers with those dedicated to him. After all, having exhibited the work of others, his own work has yet to be discovered. Books, posters, reproductions, catalogues – the LieuZaide will have Jean Dieuzaide's studio collection at its disposal, along with everything that has been preserved from his 60 years of life in the visual arts.
