The first appeared at the end of the 1890s, and they became widespread from 1900 through to the 1950s, when electricity gradually took over.

In the 20th century, Comminges underwent profound changes: rural decline, the World Wars, agricultural modernization, and economic transformation.

World War I hit Comminges hard, with many men mobilized. There were many deaths in the villages, which led to the building of war memorials to pay tribute to their bravery. A drop in population, especially in rural areas, was a direct consequence; added to this was migration to towns for economic reasons, as people sought to improve their situation by going to the cities to find work.

Between the two wars, from 1920 to 1939: gradual improvements to roads and transport, the start of agricultural mechanization, but the region remained economically fragile.

World War II also affected the region, after 1942, when the Free Zone was occupied. Resistance groups developed, especially in the Pyrenees, helping people escape to Spain—resistance fighters and Jews—and a local resistance network formed, as the mountains of Comminges offered strategic refuges. After the war, population decline accelerated, and schools and shops began to close.

The town of Saint-Gaudens and the surrounding area became a regional industrial hub, with the chemical industry, aluminium, and small factories.

The Saint-Marcet natural gas field was the first natural gas deposit discovered in France, in 1939, leading to the creation of the Régie Autonome des Pétroles, which would later become ELF. In 1959, the Cellulose Aquitaine plant was created, which would become Fibre Excellence as we know it today. These two chemical industries were very important to the local economy, creating many jobs—hard work, but better paid than some other sectors, such as agriculture.

The Hôtel de Lassus continued to change in appearance, with new work carried out in the 20th century.

The place of ART and painting in Comminges

Painting already held an important place at that time, since, at the initiative of various abbés, painters left a rich legacy in the 1940s and 1950s in Comminges—Nicolaï Greschny and René Gaston-Lagorre.
The Painting Museum in Saint-Frajou, where the artist Ksenia Milicevic donated around thirty of her works to create this venue and enable talks, exhibitions and Art Cinema to develop there, with an international Art Resilience salon and an international children’s drawing biennial.
The contemporary art centre at the Chapelle Saint-Jacques is another venue that showcases the arts, with a rich programme each year; painting is well represented there, as it is in other museums across the area, such as the Arts and Figures of the Central Pyrenees museum.

Nicolaï Greschny

Nicolas Greschny, born in Estonia in 1912 into a family of icon painters, was only 5 when he fled his country (then part of the Russian Empire) with his family to escape the Bolsheviks. At 20, he left for Berlin to study Fine Arts. Around the same time, Hitler came to power in 1933; persecuted by the regime, he was imprisoned, then fled to Belgium and arrived in Toulouse in 1940, where he continued his studies at the Catholic Institute until 1942. When the Germans arrived in November 1942, he left for Albi, where he completed his studies at the Grand Seminary. He arrived in Comminges in 1949 to carry out two major commissions: the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs in Miramont-de-Comminges at the request of Abbé Laffargue, and the Church of Saint-Pierre-du Cuing at the request of Abbé Ajustron. In 1950, Albert Salomon, owner of the Encausse-les-Thermes spa, called on him to decorate the refreshment pavilion—his only secular frescoes. Abbé Ajustron would ask him to decorate the baptistery chapel of the church in Saint-Plancard. He also painted in the choir of Saint-Michel Church in Férrère-en-Barousse and in the Chapelle Saint-Jean in Ponlat. In thanks for the hospitality of priests and schoolteachers, he offered his talents by painting baptismal fonts (Encausse, Miramont, Mauléon-Barousse) and at the school in Saint-Plancard.
